The ANZAC Day AFL match between Collingwood and Essendon is one of the must-watch events on the MCG calendar – as the crowd of almost 100,000 fans falls quiet to honour the ANZACs.
However, 100 years ago – on April 25, 1925 – the first football match on ANZAC Day was played at the ‘G – an intra-club match for the Melbourne Football Club.
Launching this April – in time for the 30th anniversary of the inaugural Collingwood v Essendon match, is a new exhibit celebrating both matches – the current tradition and that intra-club match 100 years ago.
The exhibit opens on Monday April 14 and will remain for the duration of the 2025 AFL Premiership Season.
